The Artscape Theatre Centre is calling for entries for its annual Youth Jazz Series.
Set to take place on Friday, June 12, and Saturday, June 13, the event will bring together aspiring musicians and instrumentalists for two days of performance and mentorship.
Originally launched in 2003 as the Youth Jazz Festival, the programme has grown steadily and evolved into the Youth Jazz Series, reflecting increased interest and the rising standard of young performers in the province.
Artscape theatre spokesperson, Themba Mzondi, said the initiative not only offers a platform for emerging artists to showcase their talent, but also includes masterclasses led by experienced industry professionals.
Participants will have the chance to develop their skills while gaining valuable live performance experience in a professional theatre setting.
The programme will see soloists take to the stage on Friday, June 12, followed by school jazz bands performing on Youth Day, Saturday, June 13.
Mr Mzondi said the series plays an important role in nurturing young talent by giving participants exposure to live audiences, as well as the technical aspects of staging, lighting and sound.
"Aspiring musicians aged 27 and under, who are based in the Western Cape, are encouraged to apply. Auditions will take place via video submission, with applicants required to submit up to two clips of three to four minutes each, performing jazz standards or original pieces. Music literacy is not a requirement, and those who play by ear are also encouraged to enter," he said.
Selected candidates may be invited for a live audition and will be expected to attend masterclasses, rehearsals, and performances between May and June.
