The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Table Bay station responded to a call for assistance on Monday, April 6, after a local sailing yacht experienced mechanical failure near Robben Island.
NSRI Table Bay duty coxswain Davide del Fante said the volunteer crew was activated at 3.21pm following a report from a 35-foot sailing yacht.
The vessel, approximately one nautical mile south of Robben Island, had suffered motor mechanical failure and requested a tow back to its berth at the Royal Cape Yacht Club (RCYC).
"The sailing yacht was in no imminent danger.
"We advised them to continue sailing towards the Port of Table Bay while our duty crew mobilised," he said.
The NSRI rescue craft, DHL Deliverer, was launched from Station 3. The crew quickly rendezvoused with the casualty yacht in Table Bay.
A towline was established, and the rescue vessel successfully towed the yacht to the Ben Schoeman Dock. The operation concluded at 7.10pm, with the yacht safely secured at its berth.
No injuries or further assistance were required.
The NSRI, a registered non-profit organisation, relies entirely on donations and sponsorships to fund its 24/7 volunteer rescue operations.
They are dedicated to drowning prevention and safeguarding lives in South African waters.
