The critically acclaimed satirical play State Of the National DisAster (SONDA) will make its Cape Town debut at Theatre Arts with two performances on Saturday, April 25, just two days before Freedom Day.
SONDA is written and performed by Philangezwi Nxumalo, from KwaZulu-Natal, and is a bold solo that blends humour and sharp social commentary to reflect on South Africa’s post-apartheid challenges.
Mr Nxumalo draws on the lived experiences of black people, transforming their stories into performances.
The play tackles unemployment, poor service delivery, crime, poverty, and the hollow promises of political leaders, offering audiences a powerful and entertaining reflection on the state of the nation.
“Bringing SONDA to the Western Cape for the first time is especially significant. Cape Town, a key site in South Africa’s political history, provides a meaningful backdrop for a production that interrogates freedom, democracy, and the realities of contemporary society,” says Mr Nxumalo.
Artistic director of Theatre Arts, Caroline Calburn, said: “He (Mr Nxumalo) has a track record of doing well. His works speak to young people's experiences of being South African under the present government. His social commentary is very relevant,” she said.
State Of the National DisAster (SONDA) will be staged at the Theatre Arts, located at the Methodist Church on the corner of Milton Road and Wesley Street in Observatory on Saturday, April 25, with a performance at 2pm and then at 7pm.
Tickets cost R120 for general admission and R90 for students, and can be booked online through Theatre Arts.
