Experience adventure and community at the VWS Trail Challenge in Cape Town

Cape Town's most dedicated outdoor adventurers have a date with Table Mountain on Sunday, May 3, as the popular Volunteer Wildfire Services (VWS) Trail Challenge returns.

It promises breathtaking views, challenging terrain, and a powerful community spirit. This annual event is calling on runners to "Run like Wildfire" and support the volunteer firefighters who protect the Mother City's iconic landscapes.

VWS Newlands marketing manager and co-lead of the challenge, Lee Meyer-Kleynhans, said the challenge was not just a race.

"It is a critical fundraiser for the non-profit organisation made up entirely of trained volunteers who play a vital role in wildfire response across the Western Cape," he said.

All proceeds generated from entries and merchandise go directly towards covering the real costs of fighting fires, from maintaining essential equipment to training new crews.

The event offers two distances - a 10km and a 20km - both kicking off at the Gardens Rugby Football Club.

The routes are carefully selected to showcase some of the city's best mountain trails, reminding participants exactly what the VWS is fighting to protect.

But the day's energy does not stop at the finish line.

Mr Kleyhans said the vibrant race village was designed for the whole family, featuring a Jack Black beer garden, live DJ, and a host of recovery facilities like saunas, ice baths, and physio access courtesy of the Faircape Health Institute.

Food and coffee from vendors like Zuney Burgers and Vida e Caffè will ensure runners and supporters are well-fueled.

This year’s event is supported by brands such as Sealand Gear, Patagonia, Nomu, and the Two Oceans Aquarium, ensuring fantastic prizes for top finishers and spot prizes for lucky participants.

"At its heart, the challenge is about connection - connecting people to the nature VWS protects, and connecting the community with the volunteers who risk their lives to safeguard it. By entering, runners gain a direct and tangible way to support these unsung heroes," said Mr Kleyhans.
