The Baxter Theatre is abuzz with the production Stupid F******g Bird, an adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull.
Taking on the lead role of "Con" is Pretoria-born actor Nirel Sithole, who is making his debut at the Baxter Theatre Centre.
An actor and writer graduate from Stellenbosch and Africa Film Drama Art (AFDA), which has been rebranded as The School for the Creative Economy, Mr Sithole moved to Cape Town in 2023.
He described his first performance at the Rondebosch theatre as a "full circle moment" and a dream come true, having long regarded the institution as one of the best theatres in the world.
The show, directed by Swede Maria Weisby, is on the Baxter Studio stage until Saturday, May 2 at 8pm, including a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm.
The production has been adapted to reflect local realities, with the cast incorporating South African language, humour and cultural references while keeping Chekhov’s core themes intact.
The play explores ambition, desire and emotional disconnection, with Mr Sithole noting that Con’s journey centres on learning to accept life on its own terms. He said the production encourages audiences to reflect on themselves, describing it as both intellectually engaging and emotionally challenging.
According to Mr Sithole, fame seduces, corrupts and confuses; love slips through fingers; art becomes a battleground for ego, hope and meaning.
He describes Con as self-consumed and intensely emotional.
Mr Sithole expressed that the role and the theatre hold significant meaning for him. "Here I am at the Baxter performing with world-class talent," he said.
The production has garnered attention for its unique South African flavour, despite its Russian roots and American adaptation by Aaron Posner.
Mr Sithole said this meant localising the language, incorporating South African colloquialisms, and ensuring the characters and their relationships were instantly recognisable to local audiences. "We try to bring in the realness of life," he said.
He said that while the play features a wealthy family, it focuses on universal life issues that they face.
"When people look at the play, they can say, ‘Oh, that’s my aunt right there. Oh, that’s one of my cousins right there," he said.
Mr Sithole said that his character, Con, was the emotional fulcrum of the play - a stark contrast to him being reserved and having a "regulated" personality.
"Con’s journey is about learning that he can't always get what he wants and must meet the world where it is," he said.
Mr Sithole said that the engaging show was one where the audience was constantly "fighting with themselves".
"Grappling with the challenging themes and confronting their own ideologies, making for a truly dynamic theatre experience," he said.
When asked what he would say to potential audiences, Mr Sithole said: "If you are looking for a piece of theatre that is intellectually stimulating and also keeps the essentialness of what being a human is, come watch Stupid F*****g Bird*."
