This Saturday, Table Mountain will host the annual Cableway Charity Challenge, where runners and hikers will ascend Platteklip Gorge for a greater community cause.
Participants who complete the gruelling climb will receive a medal made from retired steel track rope, once used by the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC) for more than two decades.
This industrial cable, which carried millions of visitors, was removed during the 2024 annual maintenance and has been given a second life.
TMACC managing director Wahida Parker said it was a poignant collaboration, as the cable has been meticulously cut into medal discs by residents of The Ark City of Refuge, a registered non-profit organisation, supporting people affected by homelessness and unemployment.
This initiative not only transforms material but also contributes to the dignity and skill-building of the residents involved. "This medal is a reminder that this challenge is about more than the climb," she said.
"It reflects the people, the history, and the shared effort behind an event that continues to give back to our communities," said Ms Parker.
The funds raised through the challenge support four vital Western Cape organisations: Volunteer Wildfire Services (VWS), Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR), Ubuntu Football Academy, and SANParks Honorary Rangers.
These groups rely on public support to deliver essential services, ranging from mountain rescue and conservation to youth development.
With 165 participants already signed up, organisers are pushing for a final surge in entries and pledges to surpass last year’s R1.19 million total.
The challenge takes place tomorrow, Saturday, May 9, starting at sunrise and concluding at sunset at Platteklip Gorge, Table Mountain.
