Comedians Chuma Bentele and Zachary Esau were crowned joint winners of the Jive Funny Championship Final, which took place on Wednesday, May 20, at the Canal Walk Auditorium.
The sold-out event formed part of the Jive Funny Championship, a talent search aimed at uncovering the next generation of stand-up comedy stars.
The finale saw some of Cape Town’s top aspiring comedians compete for the 2026 title and a coveted performance slot at the main festival.
Both Bentele and Esau impressed judges and audiences with their sharp storytelling, confident stage presence and locally inspired humour, ultimately sharing the top honour in a closely contested finale.
The Jive Funny Festival has become an important platform for emerging comedians, helping to nurture new talent while growing Cape Town’s stand-up comedy scene.
The ultimate winner of the 2026 championship will go on to perform at the 27th Annual Jive Cape Town Funny Festival.
Comedian and championship host Yaaseen Barnes praised the level of talent showcased throughout the competition.
“Talent off the charts. We’ve seen them go through the heats, and today everybody stepped up. They showed why they were here,” he said. “For a full room, a diverse room, everybody showed that we are South Africans, we are present, and we are good at this thing.”
Barnes said the judges struggled to choose a single winner because of the quality and variety of performances on the night.
“We had nine contestants. It was just too much to choose from. Too many flavours,” he said.
Thanking audiences for their support, Barnes said live comedy continues to thrive because of the city’s enthusiastic crowds.
“People don’t just come to watch the show, they come to laugh,” he said.
Speaking after the finale, the winners described the moment as emotional and unexpected, praising both the audience and the journey they had shared in comedy.
“This room is probably the best in the country. The audience is so giving, so loving. So for us to do well in this room means so much,” said Esau.
The pair also reflected on their friendship and how they had grown together on the comedy circuit over the years.
“To win this thing is so important, and I’m so happy. I’m so happy to also win it with my friend. “We’ve been doing comedy for a while. We came up together, we literally started a couple of weeks apart from each other, so it’s really special,” said Bentele.
