Cape Town Lions Club revitalises community impact with new initiatives

The Cape Town Lions Club is actively working on revitalising its presence and impact, focusing on a range of service projects from healthcare initiatives to supporting the youth, all while welcoming new energy and members.

At a recent meeting in Gardens on Monday, May 18, the club celebrated a significant year of service, reporting 8 995 lives touched and 937 total volunteer hours in the current fiscal year.

Projects ranged from feeding schemes to knitting and distributing knitted knockers, special breast prostheses to hospitals, highlighting the club’s diverse dedication to community needs.

Club president Paula Lang said the club was established in 1957 and holds the distinction of being the first Lions club founded in the Southern Hemisphere. The club is looking forward to celebrating its 70th anniversary next year.

"We are now in a crucial rebuilding phase, the club is focused on strengthening its membership base, including exploring membership options for busy individuals, such as the affiliate member status, and younger members," she said. 

The club encouraged anyone interested in contributing to their community to reach out and get involved.

"Look out for the Lions at local events, including the upcoming Cape Town Big Band Jazz Festival, to which we are taking some senior citizens from Plumsteadto which we are taking some senior citizens, from Plumstead, to see at the Baxter on Saturday, May 30. Your support directly contributes to making a difference in the Cape Town community," she said.

Lion Gail Darling, from Plumstead, said: "The club is a great way to meet like-minded people, be of service to people in your community, and to pay it forward."
