Young South African designers looking to break into the industry now have an opportunity to showcase their work, as applications open for the 2026 edition of the Nando’s Hot Young Designer (HYD) talent search.

Since 2016, the biannual programme has become one of the country’s most recognised design accelerators, helping emerging creatives move from obscurity into professional visibility through mentorship, exposure, and industry access.

For its sixth edition, designers are invited to respond to a set brief: the design of a striking linear light that could be installed in a Nando’s restaurant anywhere in the world.

Linear lighting refers to illumination created through fixtures arranged in a straight line, often used above counters or long tables. For HYD 2026, entrants are encouraged to push the concept further — creating sculptural, functional pieces that combine texture, colour, and material innovation, potentially incorporating handcrafted elements developed in collaboration with local makers.

Designs must also consider practicality, including installation, transport, and durability. Entries should not exceed 1.4 metres in length or weigh more than 28kg.

The competition will run in three phases: an open application stage, a shortlist phase where finalists develop prototypes, and a final selection phase. The overall winner will receive tailored support, including mentorship, market access, showcasing opportunities, and engagement within South Africa’s design industry.

HYD forms part of the broader Nando’s Design Programme and is regarded as one of the country’s leading biennial design initiatives. Past winners include designer Thabisa Mjo of Mash T. Design, who credits the programme with transforming her career trajectory and opening international opportunities.

The initiative is managed by Clout/SA, a design-focused platform that connects South African designers with commercial opportunities locally and abroad.

“Clout/SA celebrates the vision and vitality of South African design. We are a bridge connecting designers and makers with global opportunities,” says Creative Director Tracy Lynch.

Applications for the 2026 Nando’s Hot Young Designer search are now open.

Entries close on June 16, 2026. For more information and to submit entries online, visit the official microsite: www.hotyoungdesigner.com
