From award-winning wines and elegant accommodation to family-friendly dining and spectacular event venues, Vergelegen Wine Estate continues to cement its reputation as a premier visitor destination.

During a media visit to the farm on Friday, June 5, it became clear that the estate offers far more than wine tasting, blending heritage, hospitality, and natural beauty into a well-rounded experience.

Despite a setback earlier this year when a fire damaged the popular Stables Restaurant, Vergelegen has responded impressively with the launch of its temporary restaurant Firehorse. Open daily, with dinner service from Thursday to Saturday, the venue serves hearty comfort food in a relaxed setting. Seasonal specials, including sirloin steak evenings and traditional Sunday roasts paired with estate wines, offer good value and maintain the estate’s reputation for warm hospitality.

Managing director Wayne Coetzer said the media lunch was an opportunity for them to share what has been happening on the farm and to show their new offerings.

"As everyone knows, our Stables Restaurant burnt down recently, and so we've had to create this temporary restaurant, which is a pop-up, to service the Stables guests' needs and to keep all our staff employed. But it's also an opportunity to show what we're going to be doing on the estate going forward in terms of rebuilding the Stables. We're going to the creamery later to show you some of our homemade ice creams and show you the delightful gardens that we're developing, and just show you and update you on what's happening on this estate," he said

Mr Coetzer said that for Firehorse, they created a menu that focuses on classic, comforting food done exceptionally well.  One of the highlights, he said, was their traditional Sunday roast, served with all the trimmings.

Visitors with a sweet tooth can stop by The Creamery, which opened late last year. Estate-made ice cream, crêpes, and indulgent hot chocolate make it an appealing addition, particularly during the cooler winter months. Meanwhile, the Rose Terrace Tea Room continues to provide a charming setting for breakfasts, lunches, and traditional tea-time treats overlooking the estate’s immaculate gardens.

Vergelegen’s appeal extends far beyond food and wine. The estate’s 1 900-hectare private nature reserve remains one of its most impressive assets. Decades of conservation work have transformed land once heavily invaded by alien vegetation into a protected area of remarkable biodiversity. Guided tours offer visitors the opportunity to encounter bontebok, eland, black wildebeest, and Rau quagga, while also learning about fynbos restoration projects and sustainable farming initiatives.

For more adventurous guests, the guided hiking experience launched in 2025 offers access to areas usually closed to the public. The 13-kilometre route combines spectacular scenery with ecological insights, followed by a wine tasting and three-course lunch.

Wine, of course, remains at the heart of the Vergelegen experience. The estate continues to earn critical acclaim, with three wines receiving five-star ratings in the 2026 Platter’s Wine Guide. The flagship V range remains particularly noteworthy, with recent vintages showcasing both elegance and complexity. Under winemaker Luke O’Cuinneagain, Vergelegen appears focused on expressing the unique character of its vineyards through fresher fruit profiles and greater precision.

Recent additions such as The Potting Shed gift shop, luxury accommodation options, and a growing calendar of events further enhance the estate’s appeal. Whether visiting for a leisurely lunch, a wine tasting, a nature excursion or a special celebration, Vergelegen succeeds in offering a well-rounded experience that feels both authentic and contemporary
