Emergency services executed a complex and successful rescue operation after a man fell into an enclosed void at the Point Mall, in Sea Point, on Wednesday, June 10.
The incident was reported to the City of Cape Town's fire and rescue services at 6.40pm.
Sea Point fire station crew responded promptly to the scene on Regent Road and, upon assessing the severity of the situation, requested immediate assistance from the technical rescue team.
Fire and rescue services spokesman Jermaine Carelse said the operation required specialised equipment to safely retrieve the patient.
"A turntable ladder was deployed to transport personnel onto the rooftop, allowing them to secure the necessary anchor points for the operation," he said.
Firefighters, working in a coordinated effort alongside Metro staff, successfully hoisted the patient from the enclosed area.
By 9.15pm the patient had been safely secured on a stretcher and transferred to a waiting ambulance for transport to a nearby medical facility.
Mr Carelse said that both traffic lanes on the affected stretch of road were closed for the duration of the rescue to ensure the safety of the public and the rescue teams.
Mayoral committee member for safety and security JP Smith posted on his Facebook a video of the rescue and said that the operation highlighted the seamless collaboration between various municipal and private services, including the Metro Police, Traffic Service, and Life Healthcare response teams.
"The successful outcome serves as a testament to the high level of training and cooperation among Cape Town’s emergency personnel," he said.
