A safe space to learn, free internet access, and a chance to lead were all 21-year-old Anelisa needed to unlock her potential.
This Youth Month, the Cape Town students’ journey shows how a community platform like Safe-Hub can help young people.
After participating in Safe-Hub’s after-school programmes between 2022 and 2024, Anelisa says the experience played a pivotal role in both her personal and academic development, ultimately helping her secure a place at the University of Cape Town.
One of the programme’s greatest offerings was access to free WiFi and a dedicated study space, resources that allowed her to complete school assignments, conduct research, apply for university opportunities, create her CV, and search for jobs.
“My time at Safe-Hub played an important role in my growth both personally and academically,” she said. “It provided me with a safe, supportive environment where I could learn, connect with others, and access opportunities that helped shape my future.”
Beyond academics, Anelisa took part in sports programmes, hikes, movie days, game days, and community events, experiences she says helped her build friendships, strengthen her communication skills, and grow in confidence.
A defining moment came through the Masifunde programme, where she worked alongside other young people to organise a week of activities focused on social issues, including LGBTQI+ inclusion, respect, diversity, and human rights. The experience, she said, developed her leadership abilities, teamwork, and public speaking skills.
“Safe-Hub gave me opportunities to grow as a leader and encouraged me to step outside of my comfort zone,” she said.
Being accepted to UCT remains one of her proudest achievements, and she credits Safe-Hub’s support and encouragement for helping her pursue higher education.
As South Africa marks Youth Month, Anelisa’s story highlights how access to safe spaces, mentorship, and practical resources can empower young people to unlock their potential and create brighter futures for themselves and their communities.
