A key public amenity at the heart of Cape Town's city centre has been given a new lease on life, with the City officially reopening the refurbished public ablution facility at Greenmarket Square following repairs valued at approximately R3.7 million.
The project, led by the City's Recreation and Parks Department, involved extensive restoration work aimed at improving the functionality, safety, and appearance of the facility while preserving the heritage character of one of Cape Town's oldest public spaces.
Several City departments collaborated on the refurbishment, including Urban Planning and Design, Area Economic Development, and the Events Department, alongside the Cape Town Central Improvement District (CCID). The work was carefully coordinated to minimise disruption to traders and visitors who frequent the historic square.
The upgrades included structural and exterior repairs, replacement of damaged fixtures and fittings, security enhancements, drainage and lighting repairs, as well as improvements to accessibility and overall usability.
Speaking at the reopening, the City's mayoral committee member for community services and health, Francine Higham, said the project was about ensuring that traders, visitors, and residents have access to quality public facilities in a space used by thousands of people each year.
"Greenmarket Square has served as a public marketplace for years and remains one of Cape Town's significant heritage sites. Today, it continues to be a vibrant economic and tourism hub, supporting informal traders while welcoming thousands of residents and visitors throughout the year.
"We would like to encourage residents, traders, and visitors to make use of the upgraded facilities and to help protect this important public asset. The refurbishment ensures that users have access to safe, clean, and accessible public amenities that complement this important civic space, said Higham.
She noted that the heritage status of Greenmarket Square added complexity to the project, requiring additional planning approvals and careful restoration work.
"It's been a little bit more complex because of the heritage value of the site, but if you come and visit these facilities, you can see some of the detail in the tiling and glass work within the facility, and it's been beautifully preserved," she said.
A trader at Greenmarket Square, Innocent Phiri, welcomed the reopening of the facility, saying it would make a meaningful difference for those who work in the area every day.
Greenmarket Square remains one of Cape Town's most recognisable public spaces, serving as a tourism attraction and trading hub for informal businesses. The refurbishment forms part of the City's ongoing investment in public infrastructure that supports economic activity, tourism, and vibrant public spaces while protecting important heritage assets for future generations.
