Major car crash disrupts traffic at Buitengracht and Hans Strijdom

A collision between a Mercedes-Benz and a Mini Countryman caused a temporary traffic disruption at the intersection of Buitengracht Street and Hans Strijdom Avenue in Cape Town's CBD shortly before noon on Tuesday, June 23.

Witnesses reported hearing screams from nearby buildings in the city centre moments before the Noon Gun was fired.

The Mini Countryman sustained extensive front-end damage, and its airbags were deployed.

The driver, a woman, declined to comment as she was visibly shaken by the incident.

The driver of the Mercedes, Mark Smith, said: "I was coming across this traffic light over here, and the lady looked at the second light there. I think these are red, those are green, and she put foot and she- she- she hit the- she impacted me at full swing."

By about 12.40pm, the damaged vehicle had been moved to the side of the road, allowing traffic flow to return to normal.
