The Cape of Good Hope Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is urging pet owners, livestock keepers, and the public to take immediate action to protect animals following a Yellow Level 4 warning for disruptive rain issued by the South African Weather Service.
The warning highlights significant risks of heavy rainfall, localised flooding, and hazardous conditions as a cold front moves across Cape Town and surrounding areas.
The SPCA is appealing to pet owners to bring animals indoors wherever possible. For animals that must remain outside, owners must provide waterproof and windproof shelters that are raised off the ground. These shelters should include clean, dry bedding that is checked and replaced daily. Additionally, food and fresh water must be provided in sheltered areas.
For horses and farm animals, the organisation stresses the need for protection from wind and rain, along with access to dry feed and clean water.
SPCA spokesperson for the Cape of Good Hope, Belinda Abraham, urged owners to remove excessive mud around shelters to reduce the risk of hoof-related diseases.
"Step outside, check on every animal in your care, and ask yourself one simple question: If I had to spend the day out here... would I be okay? The answer is going to be no."
"Weather warnings aren't only for people. Animals are just as vulnerable to cold, rain, and flooding, and they depend entirely on us to keep them safe," she said.
Members of the public are also asked to remain vigilant and report any animals left chained in the rain, without shelter, or in distress.
SPCA Inspectors remain on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
