Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is welcoming families, nature lovers and visitors of all ages to experience the magic of winter with the return of its popular Winter Wonders 2026 programme.
The school holiday programme, which began on Saturday, June 27, and runs until Monday, July 20, offers a variety of family-friendly activities celebrating nature, creativity and outdoor adventure. Children aged 17 and under enjoy free entry to the garden throughout the Winter Wonders period.
Kirstenbosch event and tourism manager Sarah Struys said the programme aims to create meaningful experiences for families during the winter school holidays.
"Winter Wonders is about creating memorable moments in nature. With free entry for children and activities that combine creativity, culture and environmental learning, we continue to make Kirstenbosch a place where families can spend quality time together while connecting with nature," she said.
Visitors can enjoy a range of hands-on activities, including pot-a-plant sessions where children can plant indigenous plants to take home, rock painting, sand art, a children's nature corner with art activities and building blocks, and a self-guided nursery scavenger hunt.
Families can also take part in guided garden walks, interactive drumming, and marimba sessions, while adults can relax with scenic walks, picnic spots, and warm meals at the garden's restaurants. The Kirstenbosch Bookshop and Gift Shop is also offering special discounts during the school holidays.
From Tuesdays to Fridays, MOYO Restaurant will host a programme where art and music meet nature, featuring marimba performances, drumming, sun art and guided garden walks.
Special guided adventure walks for children aged six to 12 will take place on Tuesday, June 30, Tuesday, July 7, and Tuesday, July 14 from noon to 1pm. Each young participant will receive a complimentary hot chocolate at MOYO after the walk.
Bird enthusiasts can also join a guided bird walk on Tuesday, July 14, led by Cape Bird Club guide Felicity Ellmore. The walk is suitable for all ages.
Visitors are encouraged to plan their visit. Free tickets for children can be collected at the Kirstenbosch ticket office on arrival.
