Several Western Cape tourism organisations have been recognised for their commitment to sustainable and community-focused tourism at the 2026 WTM Africa Responsible Tourism Awards, held in Cape Town during World Travel Market Africa last week.
Leading the province's winners was the V&A Waterfront Academy, which received a Gold Award for its work in skills development, enterprise support, and the creation of employment opportunities for young people and aspiring entrepreneurs.
The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company also earned a Gold Award for its long-term efforts to reduce its environmental impact through initiatives such as waste reduction, resource efficiency, and local procurement.
Unexplored Cape Town received a Silver Award for offering locally led, small-group experiences that showcase lesser-known neighbourhoods while supporting community guides, small businesses and creatives.
The Cape Tourist Guides Association was recognised as "One to Watch", with judges praising its commitment to ethical guiding, professional development and responsible tourism practices.
Meanwhile, Stellenbosch-based Township & Village was commended for creating economic opportunities within township communities through tourism that prioritises local ownership and authentic visitor experiences. The organisation has previously received both regional and global recognition for its community-driven tourism model.
The Western Cape Government said the awards reflect the province's growing reputation as a leader in responsible tourism, highlighting initiatives that create jobs, support small businesses, preserve cultural and natural heritage, and promote more inclusive tourism experiences.
In congratulating the winners, the provincial government said it would continue working with industry partners to expand responsible tourism practices and ensure tourism growth delivers lasting social, economic and environmental benefits.
The awards celebrate organisations across Africa that demonstrate how tourism can positively impact local communities while protecting the environment and supporting sustainable economic development.
