There were tears of joy, proud embraces and thunderous applause at Artscape on Thursday, August 6, as young ballet dancers walked away with gold medals, international scholarships and prestigious awards after three days of intense competition at the 13th South African International Ballet Competition (SAIBC).
Held at the Artscape Opera House over three days, the competition brought together 118 dancers from South Africa and abroad, with competitors from countries including Cuba, Russia and the United Kingdom showcasing their talent before an international panel of judges.
International scholarships reward years of dedication
Among the competition's biggest success stories were Moledi Langa, Jayden Josh Samuels and Mikayla van Heerden, who each impressed judges with exceptional performances across multiple disciplines.
Langa, 12, won gold in the Scholar Classical division, shared silver in the Scholar Contemporary section, and received the coveted Special Jury Award. She also won several international opportunities, including a scholarship to the Interlochen Center for the Arts in the United States, free entry to the Dance World Cup African Qualifier, an invitation to the Youth Grand Prix Europe, and a fully sponsored Winter Intensive at the European School of Ballet in Amsterdam.
Samuels, 16, won gold in the Junior Classical Boys, gold in Junior Contemporary Boys, and gold in the Junior Classical Pas de Deux. He also earned the prestigious Sir Geoffrey Neiman Award for Best Male Dancer, along with scholarships and invitations to the Interlochen Center for the Arts, Youth Grand Prix Europe and the European School of Ballet in Amsterdam.
Cape Town dancers among the top performers
In Cape Town, Solima Mathiso from Ashton won silver in the Junior Classical Boys, while the EAON Group in Athlone won gold for choreography in the Contemporary Large Groups section.
Competition opens doors for young ballet talent
Artistic director of Mzansi Ballet Dirk Badenhorst, who founded the SAIBC, said the standard of entries continues to grow every year.
"It is especially exciting to see so many talented South Africans performing alongside gifted dancers from around the world. The SAIBC is about inspiring one another, building friendships, celebrating excellence and creating opportunities for the next generation of ballet artists."

The gala concert brought the competition to a spectacular close with performances by winning dancers and guest artists.
