For nearly two decades, Amanda February has helped steer the finances behind one of South Africa’s most significant heritage institutions.
As Chief Financial Officer of Groot Constantia Trust, her work goes beyond balance sheets, with a focus on ensuring the historic estate remains financially sustainable for generations to come.
Since joining Groot Constantia in 2007, February has taken on increasing responsibility across finance, governance and strategic planning. Today, she plays a key role in balancing the estate’s heritage with the realities of running a sustainable organisation.
We caught up with her to talk about leadership, financial stewardship, women in the workplace and protecting Groot Constantia’s legacy.
CapeTowner: You’ve been with Groot Constantia since 2007. Looking back, what has been the most rewarding part of your journey to becoming Chief Financial Officer?
The journey itself has been very rewarding. I have had the opportunity to learn, grow and take on new responsibilities over the years. I have also been fortunate to work with people who have contributed to my development. Becoming CFO was an important milestone for me, but I think what I value most is everything I have learned and the relationships I have built along the way.
Balancing heritage, sustainability and leadership
CapeTowner: As CFO, how do you balance preserving a 340-year-old institution while ensuring it remains financially sustainable for future generations?
It is about finding the right balance between respecting our history and looking towards the future. We have to make responsible financial decisions and ensure that the organisation remains sustainable, while also protecting the heritage that makes Groot Constantia unique. It is important to understand that preserving our heritage and ensuring financial sustainability go hand in hand.
CapeTowner: What has been the biggest lesson you’ve learnt as a woman in executive leadership?
I have learned that leadership is earned through credibility, consistency, and the ability to make sound decisions, particularly during challenging circumstances. I have also learned not to underestimate the value of resilience.
There will always be obstacles, but they provide opportunities to learn and become stronger. As women, we should not be afraid to take our place at the leadership table and to contribute our perspective with confidence.
On valuing people, staying inspired, and empowering the next generation
CapeTowner: Behind every successful organisation is a dedicated team. How do you foster a workplace culture where people feel valued and empowered to grow?
I believe that people want to feel that they are appreciated and that their contribution makes a difference. I try to encourage open communication and create opportunities for people to learn and take on new responsibilities.
I also believe in recognising people’s efforts and supporting them when they face challenges. When people feel valued, they are more likely to take pride in what they do.
CapeTowner: After nearly two decades at Groot Constantia, what continues to inspire and motivate you every day?
There is always something happening, so you never stop learning. I enjoy the variety of my role and the opportunity to work with different people and departments. I am also motivated by knowing that the work we do contributes to the future of Groot Constantia. And, of course, working in such a beautiful and historic environment is something I can’t take for granted.
CapeTowner: When you look ahead, what legacy do you hope to leave, not only for Groot Constantia, but for the next generation of women leaders in South Africa?
I would like to be remembered as someone who led with integrity, professionalism and compassion, while making a meaningful contribution to the organisation.
I hope that I can encourage young women to believe in themselves, pursue their goals and not be afraid to take opportunities when they come their way.
I also believe in supporting other women and sharing what we have learned. If I can help someone else grow along the way, that would be a legacy I would be very proud of.
