ANOTHER six police officers have been arrested on charges of defeating the administration of justice and 26 counts of fraud after they allegedly fraudulently submitted false financial claims.
The members were in custody and due to appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrates’ court today, police spokesperson Frederick van Wyk said.
“The Western Cape Anti-Corruption Unit arrested six police officials attached to Khayelitsha Detective Service for defeating the administration of justice and 26 counts of fraud.
“Five of the six suspects - two sergeants and four constables aged between 31 and 41 - were arrested at Khayelitsha SAPS when they reported for duty (yesterday) while the sixth suspect was later arrested at his residence in Khayelitsha,” Van Wyk said.
According to records, the officers travelled to the Eastern Cape for an investigation in 2022, and on their return submitted fraudulent claims for subsistence and travelling allowance amounting to R16 065.
“Allegations reveal that they would pay for accommodation and then request a receipt with a higher amount as paid.
“Members would also share a room, but then request two separate receipts,” Van Wyk said.
One of the members also faces a charge of defeating the administration of justice in another Khayelitsha case after he failed to arrange the travel and accommodation arrangements for a witness in a pending murder case.
Van Wyk said after thorough investigation by the Anti-Corruption Unit, the docket was presented to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) who decided to charge the members.
On Tuesday, the Khayelitsha Magistrates’ Court authorised warrants of arrest which were executed.
Earlier this week, three Nyanga police officers were arrested for a business robbery that occurred five months ago.
The constables allegedly took money and cigarettes from a spaza shop in Extension 2 in Mfuleni on October 1, 2024.
According to a police incident report, the members of the Visible Policing unit were in their uniform and driving the state vehicle when the crime was committed.
The members allegedly robbed a shop of R 5 600 as well as cigarettes to the value of R6 930.
The Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) of the vehicle with cell phone records put members on the scene and the members were arrested on Monday as they were about to start their last night shift before going on rest days, Saps said.
