Most steak lovers know their favourite cut, but how many could tell the difference between a Black Angus and a Chianina, or explain how ageing changes the flavour of the meat?
A new Cape Town dining experience aims to answer those questions one bite at a time.
On Friday, July 24, premium beef educator Thelma Maritz, founder of Die Vleismeisie, will host a Steak & Wine Experience at Cellar Collective Wine Bar in Woodstock, inviting guests to discover how breed, cut, ageing methods and wine pairings all shape the taste of premium beef.
Rather than a traditional steak dinner, the evening is designed as a guided tasting featuring three curated courses. Each course will showcase a different combination of beef, cut and ageing method, allowing diners to compare the subtle differences in flavour, tenderness and texture.
Guests will taste beef from renowned breeds including Black Angus, Simmentaler and Chianina, while exploring the impact of wet-aged versus dry-aged meat. The experience also delves into how marbling, muscle structure, and butchery techniques influence the final product.
Each course will be paired with a carefully selected wine, highlighting how different varieties can enhance richness, soften tannins and unlock new flavour profiles within the same cut of steak.
"The goal isn't simply to serve exceptional steak," says Maritz. "It's to help people understand why exceptional steak tastes the way it does. Once you begin comparing breeds, ageing methods and pairings side by side, you realise that no two great steaks are ever quite the same."
Hosted at Cellar Collective's intimate wine bar on Sir Lowry Road, the event has been limited to just 30 guests, creating a relaxed setting for conversation and discovery around the table.
The experience is aimed at food lovers, wine enthusiasts and curious diners looking to deepen their appreciation for premium beef in much the same way wine tastings encourage guests to explore different terroirs and vintages.
The Steak & Wine Experience takes place on Friday, July 24 from 6.30pm at Cellar Collective Wine Bar, 111 Sir Lowry Road, Woodstock.
