The Heal the Hood Project, a non-profit organisation that utilises elements of hip hop culture to foster positive youth interaction, will launch its new youth album with a live performance at the V&A Waterfront Amphitheatre on Heritage Day, Tuesday, September 24, at 2pm.
Part of the WOMAD Kidz 4 Culture Day programme, the event will showcase pupils from schools across Cape Town who participated in Heal the Hood’s 2023/2024 rap and dance programme.
Many of these pupils come from under-resourced communities and have created original music reflecting their lived experiences, hopes for the future, and messages of unity and empowerment.
The highlight will be live performances by the young artists, representing their schools and communities on a public stage. The album, produced in collaboration with local artists and facilitators, will be on sale at the event, with proceeds funding future programmes in local schools.
“This album is more than music; it’s a message from our youth to the world,” says Heal the Hood Project managing director, Tanswell Jansen.
