Acclaimed dance choreographer Sbonakaliso Ndaba from Southfield will present Sbo Ndaba’s Bolero at the Artscape Theatre on Wednesday, April 29, and Friday, May 1.
The production forms part of the Suidoosterfees, running from Wednesday, April 29, to Sunday, May 3.
Bolero is a personal journey of departure and return, rooted in memory, ancestry, and rhythm. The work is inspired by Ms Ndaba’s early experience as a young dancer training at Jazzart Dance Theatre under the mentorship of Alfred Hinkel, where she first performed Bolero.
This new interpretation revisits that formative path through the lens of lived experience.
The choreography opens with the grounded rhythms of Gumboot Dance, a movement language born in the mines as a symbol of resilience and communication across cultures. It then unfolds like a journey through time, weaving together stories, diverse movement traditions, and transformation.
Ms Ndaba is supported by her non-profit organisation, SboNdaba Dance, which will be part of this production. SboNdaba Dance is based in Observatory, which creates opportunities for underprivileged dancers.
Performances will take place at the Johann Brink Theatre, Artscape Theatre on April 29 at 3pm and May 1 at 12 noon. Tickets are available from R50 via Webtickets.
