Cape Town City Ballet will bring comedy, glamour, and larger-than-life characters to the stage this winter with Orpheus in the Underworld, running at the Artscape Opera House from Friday, June 12 to Sunday, June 21.
Choreographed by South African choreographer Veronica Paeper, the production offers a playful twist on the classic Greek myth, inspired by Jacques Offenbach’s comic operetta.
Set in the 1920s, audiences can expect flapper fashion, Mafia-style intrigue, and an underworld nightclub brought to life through sets and costumes by Peter Cazalet, with audiovisual effects by Kirsti Cumming.
The production features an orchestral arrangement by Michael Tuffin, performed live by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra under conductor Brandon Phillips.
Leading roles will be performed by dancers including Leusson Muniz, Axton Green, Caesar Elsner, and principal ballerina Kirstél Paterson.
