For many, the red-carpeted halls of Artscape Theatre Centre were once spaces they could only admire from a distance.
Now, as the iconic theatre celebrates its 55th anniversary, it is inviting everyone to step inside and become part of its story.
Under the theme 'A Place for All', Artscape will host a day of free public celebrations on Tuesday, May 19, at its venue, marking more than five decades of South African performance, creativity, and transformation.
The festivities begin from 10.30am and will include the unveiling of a new memory wall as well as a large public group photograph on the theatre steps — a symbolic moment aimed at reflecting Cape Town’s diversity and shared history.
The programme is designed for public participation, including a free lunchtime performance at 12.30pm featuring opera and youth jazz bands.
This lineup shifts the focus from ‘high-art’ conventions to community-led performances, tracing the scars and successes of 55 years of South African art and history.
“This building belongs to the people,” said Marlene Le Roux, CEO of the Artscape Theatre. “For 55 years, Artscape has held the stories, memories, and creative spirit of generations of South Africans.
"This is an opportunity for the public to stand with us and become part of that continuing story.”
The Artscape, originally opened as the Nico Malan Theatre Centre in 1971, has shifted from a site of exclusion to a national institution.
The Artscape is celebrating how far the building has come and wants to honour the people who make the theatre come alive with creativity - the vibrant community of Cape Town.
The festivities will continue beyond the anniversary with a series of free Saturday masterclasses.
Confirmed sessions run from May 23 until June 13, from 10am to 12pm, and will focus on the business of the arts and behind-the-scenes career opportunities.
Entry to the anniversary event on Tuesday, May 19, is free.
