A burlesque showcase that has raised almost R300 000 for survivors of sexual violence over the past decade will return later this month for its 11th annual fundraiser in support of Rape Crisis Cape Town Trust.
The Grand Exhibition will take place at the Star Theatre at the Homecoming Centre on Saturday, June 27.
Since launching in 2015 at the Hope Street Market before an audience of about 80 people, the event has grown into one of the city's largest burlesque fundraisers, with this year's show expected to attract around 320 attendees.
The annual event brings together performers from across the burlesque community, ranging from newcomers to internationally recognised artists, with all proceeds supporting Rape Crisis.
Organisers say the partnership between the show and the organisation is rooted in burlesque's emphasis on body positivity, self-expression and reclaiming bodily autonomy.
Many performers have shared personal reasons for supporting the cause, highlighting themes of empowerment, healing and solidarity with survivors of gender-based violence.
Performer Diamond Duchess said her act would focus on bodily autonomy and the message that "no means no".
Lupay Brown described burlesque as a way for people to celebrate and express themselves on their own terms, adding that she dreams of a society where everyone can feel safe in their bodies.
For performer Velvet Rose, participating in the event is an opportunity to stand alongside survivors and help ensure their voices are heard.
Others, including Vixellá Hart, Baby Ray, Ruby Rouge, and Silky Siren, said the event creates a supportive environment where performers and audience members can celebrate empowerment while contributing to an important cause.
The event will also feature performances by Know Direction, whose members said they were proud to support an organisation working to create a safer society.
