Thandi Swaartbooi will celebrate 40 years of work in South African arts, culture and community development with a two-performance concert at Arena on Friday, August 14 and Saturday, August 15.

The concert will trace Swaartbooi’s artistic journey, beginning with the creation of Women Unite, the all-female marimba band she founded to create opportunities for women in music and performance.

Swaartbooi is also a music teacher and cultural activist at the iThemba Labantu Lutheran Community Centre in Philippi.

Over four decades, Swaartbooi has become a multi-award-winning artist, toured internationally, and worked as a community development practitioner. Her work has included creating platforms for women, supporting emerging artists, and using music and performance as tools for community development.

Through live music, narration and performance, the concert will explore key moments in her career, including its challenges and achievements. Women Unite will perform alongside guest artists and collaborators who have been part of Swaartbooi’s artistic journey.
