With the music landscape constantly evolving, fresh talent continues to emerge, captivating listeners and reshaping the industry.
One such talent is Mpumelelo Khumalo, better known as MK Productions, an enigmatic producer who has taken the rhythm of South African music by storm. If you’ve been grooving to Dlala Thukzin’s album “Finally Famous Too”, you’ve almost certainly encountered MK’s sound, as he’s the genius behind several infectious tracks including “Sohlala Sisonke”, “Dali”, “Hlala Nami”, “Khumbula”, and “Izinto”. But who is the man behind these earworms?
From Durban, MK Productions discovered his passion for music as a teenager, initially dreaming of a career in professional wrestling. "I first wanted to be a professional wrestler. I was an avid fan of wrestling, like just WWE and all that stuff," he recalls with a chuckle, admitting that reality eventually nudged him towards music.
By 2008, MK had caught the music bug, spurred on by his fascination with hip hop and inspired by artists like Soulja Boy and Drake. It was a technological magazine that introduced him to music-making software, setting him on a path of musical exploration and production.
Determined to refine his craft, he pursued a Bachelor of Arts in Music at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), Howard College, immersing himself in the art from beginning to end. His family offered unwavering support throughout this journey, nurturing his passion every step of the way.
When pressed about his inspirations and creative process, MK shares that he prefers to work with a clean slate. “I go the opposite direction. I prefer to listen to nothing. I just listen to nature. I listen to what I hear in my head,” he states. This unique approach allows him to construct songs that encapsulate the true essence of creativity - what he refers to as the "soul of the song."
In the span of his burgeoning career, MK has collaborated with some notable artists, including a recent feature on DJ Zinhle and Skillz's hit “Sorry”, showcasing his versatility in the studio. These collaborations not only support his reputation but also provide meaningful learning experiences. "I’ve learned a lot about the business side of things," explains MK. "Other people's experiences have taught me a lot about how exactly I should move as a brand."
2025 promises to be a pivotal year for the young producer as he hones in on projects that have been at the front of his vision. “This year I will be releasing a project, starting with a single. I'm currently doing many sessions across different provinces with artists that I’ve been wanting to create with,” he divulges, indicating a busy year ahead filled with collaboration and creativity.
MK Productions is a name that music lovers should keep an ear out for. His journey from an ambitious teen to a sought-after producer serves as a testament to dedication, passion and the transformative power of music in SA.
