With the Covid-19 pandemic and its lockdown regulations, the Labia Theatre is bringing movies into the homes of film-lovers with its video-on-demand streaming service of Labia-curated films.
Cinema patrons can now stream movies online at a cost of R60 to view, with the title being available for up to six hours. This was launched on July 1 in efforts to keep the Labia alive during the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown.
The Labia’s Ludi Kraus said the independent cinema had been closed for over four months following the initial lockdown and that they had had to come up with a new plan to entertain their patrons. “We’re now following our niche in the market, concentrating on award-winning films, documentaries, foreign language films and independent and interesting films and we’re providing that on a streaming platform,” he said.
Mr Kraus said there’s been positive feedback from movie lovers. “People are excited to see something alternative online and it brings it into people’s homes,” he said.
While President Cyril Ramaphosa had announced there would be amendments made to the level 3 lockdown regulations allowing for the reopening of cinemas and theatres, none of them have opened yet.
