Rodgers and Hammerstein’s legendary musical, The Sound Of Music, is on stage this week at the Artscape Opera House, from today Thursday December 14, to Sunday January 14.
The story, based on the memoir of Maria Von Trapp, follows a young nun in-training, who serves as governess to the seven children of the imperious Captain von Trapp, bringing music and joy to the household. But as the forces of Nazism take hold of Austria, Maria and the entire Von Trapp family must make a moral decision.
Presented by Pieter Toerien with Cape Town Opera, the production is directed by Steven Stead and stars Brittany Smith as Maria Rainer, Craig Urbani as Captain von Trapp, Janelle Visagie as Mother Abbess, Nadia Beukes as Baroness von Schraeder, William Berger as Max Dietweiler, Ché-Jean Jupp as Rolf Gruber, and Ashley Scott as Liesl von Trapp.
The supporting cast includes local stage performers and introduces Cape Town to 18 brand-new young performers who play the Von Trapp children.
With musical direction by Kevin Kraak, the show includes songs such as I Have Confidence, Do-Re-Mi, So Long, Farewell, Climb Ev’ry Mountain, Sixteen Going On Seventeen, Edelweiss, and the title song, The Sound Of Music.

The show offers enchanting visuals, with set design by Denis Hutchinson, lighting design by Faheem Bardien, costumes coordinated by Maritha Visagie, and choreography by Duane Alexander. Sound design is by Mark Malherbe.
