Ask someone to describe Century City, and they'll probably say "Canal Walk". They're not wrong, but they're also missing most of the story.
Beyond one of Africa's largest shopping centres lies a neighbourhood of canals, nature trails, public art and leafy green spaces. Widely regarded as one of Cape Town's safest and most pedestrian-friendly precincts, Century City is best explored on foot. Here's how to spend a day there.
First off, take a walk
The best way to get to know Century City is on foot. A leisurely walk along its network of canals and landscaped pathways reveals a quieter side of the neighbourhood, where office workers, runners, cyclists and families all share the same scenic routes.
One of the most popular routes is the Century City Walk, an easy 3.9km circular route that takes about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on how often you stop to admire the views.
Coffee, matcha or both?
After your walk, settle in for a well-earned drink. Grab a seat at Bootlegger Century City for a specialty coffee overlooking the canals. It's the perfect place to catch your breath, people-watch, and plan your next stop. If matcha is more your style, head to The Coffee Lounge, where you'll find creamy matcha lattes alongside a selection of coffees and light bites.
Explore Intaka Island
This is a hidden 16-hectare wetland reserve in the heart of Century City where nature takes centre stage. Wander along peaceful walking trails, spot more than 120 bird species from dedicated bird hides, climb Bird Mountain for sweeping views, or hop on a relaxing canal boat cruise through the waterways. With indigenous gardens, picnic spots and guided nature walks, Intaka Island is an easy way to swap the city's bustle for a few hours of fresh air and tranquillity.
Lunch at Brick Lane Eatery
When lunchtime rolls around, make your way to Brick Lane Eatery, a neighbourhood favourite tucked away along Century City's canals. The relaxed café serves everything from brunch favourites to hearty lunches, with canal-side seating that makes it easy to linger a little longer. I've stopped by a few times over the years, and it's become one of my favourite places to escape the crowds.
Families will appreciate the pet-friendly setting and outdoor play area with a sandpit, while couples and groups of friends can settle beneath the trees during the day or enjoy the courtyard after dark, when fairy lights, heaters and blankets create a cosy atmosphere.

As one of Africa's largest shopping centres, Canal Walk remains the heart of Century City, with hundreds of stores, cinemas, restaurants, and enough to keep you busy for an afternoon. Just don't make the mistake of thinking it's all the neighbourhood has to offer.
