Somerset West and the Helderberg make it easy to build a day around good food, mountain scenery, wildlife and wine. You won’t fit everything into one outing, so choose the stops that suit your plans.
Start with breakfast at Sweetwell
Begin at Sweetwell Restaurant & Destination on the R44 in Raithby.
The restaurant serves all-day breakfast and lunch in a relaxed farm setting. It is open Wednesday to Sunday from 9am to 4pm, with the last kitchen orders 30 minutes before closing.
Get outdoors at Helderberg Nature Reserve
For a dose of nature, head to Helderberg Nature Reserve on the slopes of Helderberg Mountain.
The reserve has walks ranging from 2.2km to hikes of up to eight hours, with views towards False Bay. There are picnic areas and a children’s jungle gym, while guided walks, hikes and other events are also offered.
It operates a no-bin policy, so visitors must take their rubbish home, and dogs are not allowed.
Meet the cheetahs
For something different, visit Cheetah Outreach in Firgrove.
The conservation and education centre works with cheetahs and other animal ambassadors and offers several visitor experiences. Adult cheetah encounters are normally available from 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 4pm, but are subject to availability and the condition of the animals. Adult encounters are not available on Tuesdays.
Slow down at Lourensford
If wine and food are more your pace, make Lourensford Wine Estate one of your stops.
The 4,000-hectare estate combines vineyards, fynbos, orchards and forestry with wine, food, gardens and other visitor experiences. Its tasting room is open daily from 9am to 5pm, while cellar tours are by appointment.
Add history at Vergelegen
Another option is Vergelegen Wine Estate, where wine, gardens, and more than 300 years of history come together.
Founded in 1700, the estate has extensive gardens and family-friendly attractions, including the Children’s Adventure Garden. Allow several hours if you want to explore beyond the wine tasting.
Finish with the view at Idiom
For a scenic lunch or wine tasting, head to Idiom Restaurant & Idiom Wine Tasting Centre.
The estate’s restaurant and tasting centre offer views across the Helderberg basin, Cape Peninsula and False Bay. Breakfast and lunch are available, while dinner is served on Thursdays and Fridays. Wine tastings are also available.
Or make it a wine-focused day
If you would rather spend more time among the vines, Journey’s End Winery & Vineyard is another option.
Journey’s End uses a minimal-intervention approach, including fermentation and ageing in amphorae and concrete eggs. Tastings are strictly by appointment and require at least 48 hours’ notice. The estate is closed to visitors on weekends and public holidays.
Plan your day
Don’t try to squeeze everything in.
Pair breakfast with a walk at Helderberg Nature Reserve, combine a wildlife visit with lunch, or choose one of the wine estates and give yourself time to explore properly.
That’s the appeal of Somerset West: you can build the day around what you enjoy, whether that means a mountain trail, a family outing, a long lunch or a glass of wine with a view.
Opening hours, prices, bookings and activities can change. Check directly with each venue before visiting.
