“I'm bored.”

Two words guaranteed to test any parent's patience. Luckily, Cape Town has no shortage of places to take the kids when they've run out of things to do at home.

Here are 7 ideas to keep them busy.

Acrobranch Constantia

If sitting still isn't really their thing, take them into the trees. Acrobranch has a series of obstacles and ziplines, with courses for different ages.

  • Best for: Active kids and tweens
  • Location: Constantia
  • Type: Outdoor
  • When to go: Wednesday to Sunday, 9am to 6pm from September to April. Last activity slot is at 4pm. It also opens on public and school holidays.

Cape Town Ziplines

For something a little more adventurous, head up to Constantia Nek for a zipline experience through the mountains. It's one for families who don't mind a bit of a thrill.

  • Best for: Adventurous families
  • Location: Constantia
  • Type: Outdoor
  • When to go: Book ahead and check the day's available time slots, as the experience operates as a guided tour rather than a walk-in attraction.

Go for a family hike

You don't need to spend a fortune to tire the kids out. Pick a trail that suits the family, pack some water and snacks, and head into the mountains.

  • Best for: Active families
  • Location: Various
  • Type: Outdoor
  • When to go: Early morning is a good option, particularly on warmer days. Check the relevant trail and park access times before setting out

Walk or cycle the Sea Point Promenade

Sometimes you don't need a big plan. Take the bikes or scooters, walk along the promenade, and stop for a snack when everyone needs a break.

  • Best for: Younger children and families
  • Location: Sea Point
  • Type: Outdoor
  • Anytime during daylight hours – the promenade is an open public space without set opening hours

Explore Kirstenbosch

Pack a picnic and let the kids wander. There are gardens to explore, plenty of space to walk and enough to see to keep a family busy for a few hours.

  • Best for: All ages
  • Location: Newlands
  • Type: Outdoor
  • When to go: Daily, 8am to 7pm from September to March. The garden closes at 6pm from April to August.

See Cape Town from the Red Bus

For children who like watching the world go by, the hop-on, hop-off bus is an easy way to see more of the city. You can get off, explore and jump back on when you're ready.

  • Best for: All ages
  • Location: Cape Town
  • Type: Indoor and outdoor
  • When to go: The hop-on hop-off service operates daily. Routes have seasonal timetables, so check the current timetable before choosing your departure time.

Good to know: Opening hours, prices, age requirements, and booking conditions can change. Check the attraction's official website before visiting, and follow its rules and safety guidance while you're there.
