Passengers travelling on an Intercape bus from Cape Town to East London on Sunday September 29 were delayed by eight hours after the bus got stuck four times following mechanical breakdowns.
An irate passenger, Victor Mrawu, from Khayelitsha, said the bus, which was travelling on the N1, experienced problems in Cradock, Graaf-Reinet and Tarkastad.
“People were very sad and angry because this delay played havoc with their plans. There were children going to school and some of us had important appointments to attend,” said Mr Mrawu.
He said they called the Intercape offices and tried to get answers while enduring the cold weather on the roadside.
The bus company finally got them a substitute bus after the fourth breakdown near Tarkastad, where each passenger was given “small pizza and cool drink”.
“Most of the passengers were very angry, asking for a full refund but we were told to individually file our complaints. This was too much inconvenience and I hope they will resolve this and ensure safer travel for the passengers, especially as we approach peak in festive travels,” said Mr Mrawu.
Intercape responded to a query from Vukani in a short statement: “We can confirm that there were mechanical issues on bus 8115. A replacement coach was sent, and passengers were transferred to bus 8112. There were no further incidents after the passengers were transferred to the replacement coach.
“Refreshments were provided at Queenstown for all passengers. Unfortunately, the whole trip was delayed by eight hours. Our customer care department will be in contact with Mr Mrawu,” the statement said.
