Pupils from a Cape Town city school took top honours in an Afrikaans speech competition.
Hoërskool Jan van Riebeeck pupils Karu Rademyer and Isabella Marais claimed second place in the Junior Afrikaans Huistaal category of the inaugural Nou Praat Jy! speech competition, which took place at Curro Durbanville on June, 25.
As a duet team, they delivered a joint speech themed Afrikaans – ’n taal van kleure en klank, designed to showcase the richness and regional diversity of the language.
The judges - actor and director Jan Fouche, lecturer Dr Elbie Adendorff and Lisinda de Jager, both from the University of Stellenbosch - jointly praised Karu and Isabella for their fluency, teamwork, and authenticity.
The competition marks the language’s 100-year milestone as an official language.
The format encouraged conversational delivery and put a spotlight on regional dialects of Afrikaans.
The winning schools and pupils walked away with impressive cash prizes, worth R10 000 awarded to the top teams in each category.
The competition formed part of Curro Durbanville’s Kultura Festival, a week-long celebration featuring acclaimed artists like Sandra Prinsloo, Early B, and Francois van Coke.
Individual accolades went to the top speakers in both home language and first additional language categories, including Hareem Amir, from Curro Century City, for Beste junior eerste addisionele taal spreker (Best junior first additional language speaker); Ngcali Dantile and Madison-Mãe Alexander, from Curro Durbanville High School, for Beste Senior Eerste Addisionele Taal Sprekers (Best senior first additional language speakers); Risa Burger from Curro Durbanville High School, for Beste Junior Huistaal Spreker (Best junior home language speaker); and Lara Slabber, from Hoërskool Stellenbosch for Beste Senior Huistaal Spreker (Best senior home language speaker).
