Residents are invited to have their say on a proposed compulsory heavy vehicle stop on Kloof Nek Road, aimed at reducing the alarming rate of truck and lorry accidents.

The City of Cape Town is proposing the compulsory stop, approximately 150m downhill from the pedestrian signal at Tafelberg Road.

The comment period for submissions opens today, Monday, September 15.

Mayoral committee member for urban mobility Rob Quintas invited residents and stakeholders to join the project team for an information session on Wednesday, September 17, between 3 pm and 6 pm at the Council Chambers in Wale Street.

They will have the opportunity to ask any questions.

"We aim to implement the most effective measures to improve safety along this busy access route between the CBD (central business district) and the Atlantic Seaboard," he said.

The proposed changes along Kloof Nek Road include:

  • For the current right-hand lane to accommodate general traffic, while the left-hand lane will be reserved for heavy vehicles only, for a limited distance of approximately 250m;
  • For relevant signage and road markings to be displayed, restricting heavy vehicles to the demarcated section of roadway, and requiring them to stop, engage low gear, and maintain low gear for the remainder of the downhill section.
