In celebration of Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company's (TMACC) 96th birthday, this October, South African citizens can enjoy discounted return tickets to the summit.

Since its inauguration on October 4, 1929, the cableway has provided more than 32 million visitors with safe, accessible, and unforgettable journeys to the summit of one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature.

To thank the local community for their enduring support and to encourage South Africans to explore their own backyard, TMACC is rolling out the "Local is Lekker" special.

Wahida Parker, managing director of TMACC, said: "The Local is Lekker special is our way of sharing the iconic New 7 Wonders of Nature with all South Africans and encouraging locals to be tourists in their own city before the summer rush begins."

She said that the milestone anniversary was about sharing the mountain with the people who call this country home.

Tickets cost R250 for adults and R100 for children, aged between four and 17.

Ticket prices will return to normal at R490 for an adult return ticket and R250 for a child return ticket, as of Saturday, November 1.

Final checks and preparations are underway to ensure everything is in top shape to welcome the tens of thousands of excited local and international tourists expected in Cape Town for December and January.

This includes the anticipation that the 33 millionth visitor will soon also be welcomed to the mountain.

Cape Town's tourism sector is anticipating another record-breaking festive season, a trend highlighted by strong growth earlier in the year.

Data from Cape Town International Airport has previously shown significant year-on-year growth in passenger arrivals, and the momentum is expected to continue.

  • In 2024, over 2.4 million overnight visitors contributed an estimated R24.5 billion to the local economy in Cape Town.
  • More recent trends show the city recording a six percent year-on-year growth in international arrivals and a five percent rise in bed nights sold, signaling strong demand.
  • The overall outlook for South Africa's tourism for the year suggests the industry could well surpass pre-pandemic 2019 visitor numbers.

Ms Parker said that the company was looking forward to playing its part in this thriving sector, welcoming visitors to the world-renowned summit.

TMACC was also a recipient of several awards, including being voted Best Tourist Attraction in the Kfm Best of the Cape Awards for the fourth consecutive year, and secured titles like Africa’s Leading Tourist Attraction at the World Travel Awards.

As part of the birthday celebrations, TMACC will host its annual Charity Golf Day at Atlantic Beach Golf Estate on Tuesday, November 21.

The event/ limited to 120 players, aims to bring together partners for a day of sport and vital fundraising. It will cost R9 000 to enter a fourball, and waterhole sponsorships are available at R10 000 each.

Funds raised will support two organisations that play a role in safeguarding the natural heritage of Table Mountain and its surrounds - Wilderness Search and Rescue and Volunteer Wildfire Services.

Ms Parker said: "The Charity Golf Day is a tangible way for us to invest in the sustainability of our communities and environment. By taking part, companies and individuals are helping us empower the very organisations that protect the Mountain and ensure its long-term preservation”.
