Cape Town Central police responded to a brazen midday shooting on Tuesday, November 18, in Adderley Street, leaving two men injured.

Provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg said officers arrived at around 1pm to find a 39-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his shoulder and a 38-year-old with a flesh wound. The older man was taken to the hospital for treatment, while the second was treated at the scene.

“The victims were approached by two assailants who opened fire and fled in an IVECO panel van. Police have opened two attempted murder investigations, but the motive remains unclear,” said Sergeant Twigg.

Ward councillor Ian McMahon said that while the information he has is very limited and that early indications suggest the shooting may be gang-related.

“Both men are stable. It appears to be a targeted attack on two coloured males,” he said.

A video circulating on social media shows the victims lying in the street, surrounded by a crowd of onlookers, while law enforcement and medical personnel attend the scene.

The incident has once again raised fears over public safety in the city centre.

Cape Town Central Community Police Forum and Cape Town Central City Improvement District (CCID) are yet to respond regarding the safety concerns in the CBD.

This is a developing story.
