The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) has issued an appeal to blood donors after stocks of O-negative, O-positive and B-positive blood dropped to critical levels.

In a statement released on Tuesday, December 9, WCBS said it is currently operating with only a two-day supply of these blood groups, below its target of maintaining a five-day reserve to meet hospital demand across the province.

WCBS public relations manager Marike Carli said the service relies on regular donors to ensure a stable blood supply.

“While O-negative, O-positive and B-positive blood is needed most urgently right now, every donation from every blood group helps ensure that we can continue providing patients with the care they need,” she said.

The blood service has appealed to existing donors with the affected blood types to donate as soon as possible, while encouraging new donors to come forward.

To qualify as a blood donor, individuals must be between 16 and 75 years old, weigh at least 50kg, be in good general health, and lead a safe sexual lifestyle. A donation takes about 30 minutes, and each unit collected can help save lives.

Residents can find their nearest blood donation clinic on the WCBS website or by contacting the service via WhatsApp at 060 549 7244.
