Two young acrobatic dancers, Hana Mouneimne and Tariro Daisy Dzere, are gearing up for the trip of a lifetime: representing South Africa at the World Dance Movement in Italy in July, and Dance Stars in Croatia.
But before they can take on the world stage, they need help to get there.
The two dancers, who train at Body Love Studio in Sea Point, are hosting a fundraising show on Sunday, February 8, at 2pm at the Homecoming Centre in District Six.
The show, which will feature a mix of acrobatics, lyrical, and contemporary dance, aims to raise the funds needed for their airfare, accommodation, entry, and costume fees.
Hana, 12, from Gardens, with national colours in acrobatics, is "acrobatics obsessed," according to her mother, Jess, and has been dancing for four years.
The international competition is a major step in her dream to pursue the sport professionally.
Tariro, 16, from Woodstock, has more than 60 gold medals to her name and said she found her voice through dance.
Having overcome challenges like dyslexia and a shy nature, she describes dancing as "a language I already knew."
She said this international opportunity, which follows an invitation to the World Dance Masters in Croatia in May, is a chance to push past limitations, and she is determined to one day open a creative studio to mentor children from underprivileged communities.
The girls have been training rigorously, dedicating three to four sessions a week, sometimes up to four hours at a time.
The competition in Italy will see them perform 2 to 2.5-minute routines, including solos and a duet.
They will also participate in workshops, learning from top international coaches and dancers.
When asked why the community should support their show, Jess said: “They work very hard on this, and we don’t have the money to just go all the way after.”
The fundraising show on February 8th will include performances by talented singers.
Tickets cost R300, with an early bird special of R250. Refreshments and food from food trucks will be on sale.
"By supporting the show, you are not just funding a trip - you are investing in the dreams and future of these dedicated dancers, giving them the platform they need to shine on the world stage," said Mrs Mouneimne.
Each of the girls, Hana and Tariro, also have their own Backabuddy. For tickets, visit Quicket.
