As summer approaches, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) is urging the public to be safety-conscious while enjoying coastal and inland waters.
The public should follow South African Weather Service warnings, and with rough sea conditions reported along the coastline and hazardous storm seas affecting certain areas, safety was paramount, said NSRI spokesperson Graig Lambinon.
Recent heavy inland snowfalls could swell rivers, he warned.
The NSRI also advises the commercial maritime industry, recreational boaters, paddlers, and sailors to use the free NSRI SafeTrx smartphone app, which is designed to enhance safety on the water.
Key safety advice includes wearing life jackets while on vessels, swimming only at lifeguard-protected beaches, and remaining vigilant about rip currents that can form unpredictably.
“Anglers and coastal hikers should be cautious, especially at high tide, and should not approach too close to the shoreline,“ he said.
The NSRI warns against crossing flooded roadways or submerged bridges, and parents and caregivers are reminded to supervise children around water, ensuring safety is a priority.
“Don’t take unnecessary risks, and let’s keep each other safe,“ Mr Lambinon said.
