The City of Cape Town and the District Six Working Committee (D6WC) honoured the late Shahied Ajam by placing blue ribbons around the trees in Hanover Street, District Six, on Monday.
Mayor Dan Plato said the committee’s former chairman had played a key role in the restitution process.
“We need to honour him,” he said. “If it wasn’t for Mr Ajam’s committment and passion, things would never have progressed this far in the restitution process.”
D6WC founding member Zahrah Nordien said they were still in shock at losing Mr Ajam who died on Saturday June 6.
“We need to honour the good work he did, and may it not go in vain,” she said.
The D6WC is inviting former District Six claimants and members of the public to place their blue ribbons or blue fabric around any tree in Hanover Street in honour of
Mr Ajam. The decorations may stay in place until Thursday August 20.
