SOULO – Single Mothers IN-powerment, managed by business woman Ronelle Steenkamp, hosted a workshop called the Greatness of a Single Mother on Saturday May 5 at the V&A Waterfront.
The networking event, attended by about 50 women, was in celebration of single mothers, and took place leading up to Mothers Day, on Sunday May 13.
Lesedi House Publishers also used the opportunity to launch a book, The Greatness of a Single Mom, by author Tsepho Nketle.
Mr Nketle, being the only man at the workshop, said he was inspired to change the way society works.
While he wasn’t raised by a single mother, growing up in a township, he saw how single mothers are perceived. “I grew up in a community where almost all women were single mothers and battled with maintenance, and men were influenced by other men who don’t pay child maintenance. “Years later, as my mind opened, I realised that I wanted to be responsible, so I decided to write this book to the men who misperceive single mothers. I needed men to know that this isn’t about you, it is about the child. I wanted to bridge that gap.”
The MC at the event was Kfm presenter Mamohau Seseane, who was also raised by a single mom. Ms Seseane shared her experience and words of encouragement to the mothers at the event. Other guest speakers included careers coach Wendy Summers, author, speaker, financial planner and single mom of two Sylvia Walker and Felicity Guest, founder of Child Maintenance Difficulties in South Africa and single mother to five children.
