Two cash-in-transit heist vehicles were forcibly stopped on the N2 near Mtubatuba on Thursday morning.
According to KZN Private Ambulance Services, one of the vehicles was bombed, and multiple gunshots were fired.
It is understood they failed to bomb the other van.
Spokesperson Craig Botha said they responded.
"One patient was treated on scene for minor injuries."
Botha said the roadway has been closed to traffic and the SAPS were on scene.
SAPS have been approached for further details.
In another incident, also in KZN last month, the N2 highway near the NPC Cement Factory was brought to a standstill after robbers ambushed a cash-in-transit vehicle during peak hour.
Dramatic footage of the robbers blowing up the van went viral on social media.

The robbers made their getaway through Chatsworth, opening fire on a taxi and killing one woman.
Later that afternoon, one of the suspects allegedly linked to the CIT heist was killed in a shoot-out with police in the Glenwood, Durban area. Police said the money was found abandoned in a vehicle.
According to the latest crime statistics, KZN was the capital of cash-in-transit heists over three months.
During October 2024 and December 2024, there were 29 cash-in-transit heists across South Africa with KZN recording 10.
Last week police in the Eastern Cape arrested a G4S employee who was involved in the hijacking and kidnapping of G4S members loading ATMs. He remains behind bars awaiting a bail application.
