The race for top spot in the First Division C is beginning to take shape.
Victories for Yorkshire Cricket Club and Varsity College put the two top sides in the driving seat of the Western Province Cricket Association’s one-day league.
Leading the pack, Yorkshire earned bonus points after wins against Kensington and Khayelitsha, at the weekend. They lead the table with 30 points after seven wins in eight matches.
Yorkshire’s spinners, Dawood Christians and captain Raees Carr are having the best start with the red ball, on the pitch.
Christians spinned his way to four wickets and 29 runs in their win against Bergvliet a fortnight ago. He then took three wickets in their win against Kensington on Saturday, November 23.
Captain Carr picked up 10 wickets in two games for Yorkshire this past weekend. He got a fiver against Kensington, followed by a 5/10 runs bowling figure, on Sunday, against Khayelitsha.
Coach at Yorkshire, Sabir Mallie packs a strong outfit. He is confident of a good result ahead of their second encounter against Khayelitsha, at Chukker Road, on Saturday, November 30.
One point behind Yorkshire is the students, Varsity College.
VC got a two-wickets victory against Bergvliet on Saturday, November 23.
They have six wins, two losses and five bonus points, in eight matches and have played a game in advance as they prepare for the University Sports South Africa Games.
In third position, Bergvliet too, have a good line-up, filled with dangerous all-rounders, from Calvyn Niedermeyer, Ncedo Tywaku, Matthew James and Craig Lawrence.
Coach Shane Lewis’s side is yet to find its mojo, after three wins, two losses and three bonus points.
Behind Bergvliet, in fourth position, is Atlantis Cricket Club. Out of five recorded matches, Atlantis have won three and lost two, with three bonus points, sitting on 15 points.
Atlantis beat Blue Downs by 48 runs last week. The loss for Blue Downs moved them to fifth position.
Behind Blue Downs is Hanover Park; the only team to beat Yorkshire this season. They won by two wickets in the opening match.
Wynberg Cricket Club moved up to seventh position after a recorded win against Hanover Park last week.
Making up the bottom of the log is Kensington, Montrose and Khayelitsha.
These skilled sides, with talented young players that recently got call-ups to the provincial junior cricket teams, will be looking for maximum points come Saturday, November 30.
Kensington will host Bergvliet and Khayelitsha will travel to Kenwyn to meet Yorkshire. Matches start at 10am.
