Flower season is the perfect excuse for a road trip out of Cape Town.

Instead of rushing up the West Coast, stopping for a few photos and heading straight home, you can also turn the trip into a weekend escape with wildflowers, coastal views, farm stalls, seafood and a slower stay in Paternoster.

Here’s a route to consider.

Start with the scenic route

From Cape Town, head towards the West Coast along the R27, with Paternoster roughly two hours away by car.

The journey is part of the experience, so leave time for roadside farm stalls and delis around areas such as Yzerfontein, Darling and Langebaan. Pick up fresh produce, homemade treats and snacks for the road before continuing towards the flowers.

Stop at West Coast National Park

The main flower-season stop is West Coast National Park, particularly the seasonal Postberg section, which opens during flower season.

Take your time driving through the park, stopping at viewpoints along the way. The landscape shifts between carpets of wildflowers, white-sand beaches, and views across the Atlantic.

For the best flower displays, aim for a sunny visit around mid-morning to early afternoon, when the flowers are more likely to be fully open.

Finish in Paternoster

After a day among the flowers, continue north to Paternoster.

The whitewashed fishing village is made for slowing down. Walk along the beach, explore the village and settle in for a long lunch before watching the sun go down over the Atlantic.

Stay for seafood and sundowners

For a coastal dining experience, Abalone Hotel & Villas offers two options: the Oyster Lounge for oysters, lunch and sundowners, and Blues Restaurant for a more substantial dinner inspired by West Coast flavours.

If you're turning the trip into an overnight stay, the hotel is also offering a Spring Coastal Getaway from R4,850 for two sharing.

The package includes two nights' accommodation, breakfast, a welcome drink, a sushi or oyster experience, and a couple's Swedish massage.

Make a weekend of it

With flowers, coastal scenery, good food and plenty of places to stop along the way, the West Coast is worth experiencing at a slower pace.

Set off from Cape Town, take your time exploring the route and give yourself a night in Paternoster before heading home. The flowers may be the reason for the road trip, but the journey is part of the experience.
