Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) will open its doors with free access for all visitors on Heritage Day, Thursday, September 24.
The museum at the V&A Waterfront Silo precinct will run a full day of cultural programming from 10am to 6pm. The event offers Cape Town residents, commuters, and families an opportunity to access world-class contemporary art, architecture tours, and creative workshops at no cost.
Heritage Day is a key cultural moment for the city, bringing communities together to celebrate South Africa’s shared history and diversity. For Cape Town residents, visitors, and families, the annual open day offers free public admission to the contemporary art museum.

What to expect on the day
Museum & Exhibition Access
- Free general admission to explore all gallery spaces and contemporary collections across seven floors, from 10am to 6pm. No pre-booking required; tickets are issued at the entrance on a first-come, first-served basis.
Guided Exhibition Tours
- Walk through the galleries with expert guides highlighting celebrated contemporary African art. Available throughout the day on a drop-in basis.
Multilingual Architecture Tours
- Discover the century-old Grain Silo's history and its structural transformation. Runs periodically throughout the day; check the Bloomberg Connects app for session times.
Silo Tote Bag Workshop
- Creative workshop for teenagers and adults to make personalised tote bags inspired by the silos. Held throughout the day; limited capacity per session on a first-come, first-served basis.
Children's Creative Workshop
- Brand-new hands-on workshop tailored for younger visitors, inspired by current exhibitions. Runs continuously through the day.
Art Patrol Immersive Experience
- Interactive intervention exploring art safeguarding and conservation from the perspective of museum staff. Held at scheduled intervals during the day.
Outdoor Food Court and Live Music
- Local food stalls powered by Makers Landing alongside live musical performances by V&A Buskers and local groups. Open during event hours outside the museum.

Visitors can use the Bloomberg Connects app to navigate the building’s seven floors, locate Heritage Day activities, and access exhibition details. The app includes multilingual functionality, featuring South African languages, to make museum content accessible to all guests.
