A new 60-minute experience at the historic La Motte estate will combine works by South African artist JH Pierneef with wine and canapés from Wednesday, October 7.
La Motte in Franschhoek is introducing a new experience centred on its collection of works by South African landscape artist Jacob Hendrik Pierneef (1886–1957).
The Pierneef Wine & Art Experience invites visitors into the estate's historic Manor House, which dates to around 1758, to view artworks and memorabilia from the collection while tasting wines from La Motte's Pierneef Collection.
The 60-minute experience includes two Pierneef Collection wines paired with four canapés.
A relationship dating back to 2002
La Motte's association with Pierneef's work dates back to 2002, when the estate introduced its Pierneef Collection of wines.
The connection also influenced the collection's packaging. The wine labels feature reproductions inspired by a limited edition of 128 linocut prints by Pierneef that had been in the possession of La Motte owner Hanneli Rupert since the 1960s.
La Motte subsequently approached Pierneef's only child, Marita Bailey, for permission to use her father's name and reproduce the works on the labels. The collaboration developed into a friendship between Bailey and the estate.
The Pierneef collection at La Motte
In 2009, Bailey expressed her wish to return her private collection of Pierneef artworks from the UK to South Africa, where the works could be preserved and made available to the public.
La Motte subsequently acquired 42 original artworks, covering various media and dating from 1908 to 1955. The collection includes preliminary sketches, preparatory works and completed oil paintings.
For more than a decade, the works were displayed in the La Motte Museum. Following the introduction of La Motte Reimagined and its interactive art experience at the La Motte Ateljee, the Pierneef collection has moved to the estate's Manor House.
The new experience provides an opportunity to view the collection in its new setting while learning more about Pierneef's work and his connection with La Motte.
What visitors can expect
The Pierneef Wine & Art Experience combines a viewing of the artworks and memorabilia with a tasting of two wines from the Pierneef Collection.
The wines will be served alongside four canapés during the hour-long experience.
The experience takes place on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10:00 to 11:00, starting on 7 October.
